Jackass Forever and Moonfall are the first offerings of the February cinematic slate, differing in terms of the overall success they were able to generate throughout the weekend. Paramount’s Jackass Forever took command of the domestic box office, bringing in a weekend total of $23.5 million, while Lionsgate’s Moonfall floundered with a moderate $10 million total.

Paramount’s Jackass Forever is the fourth installment of the comedic daredevil franchise, starring Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man, and other crazed individuals brave enough to put themselves in harm’s way to generate a few laughs. The film opened Friday, bringing in an opening night $9.6 million total, and followed that with an $8.4 million Saturday performance. Unfortunately, Sunday proved to be the slowest day for Jackass Forever, generating $5.5 million to bring its three-day total to $23.5 million.

Reviews have equally been kind to the comedy-based film, which earned an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ grade from CinemaScore. The total accumulated by Jackass Forever over the weekend also helped propel the film into a position that only Scream could secure for a short time. Jackass Forever dethroned Marvel Studios and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which consistently sat atop the domestic box office since its December release, claiming the illustrious top spot six out of its seven weeks in theaters.

However, Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall failed to produce the same level of success throughout the weekend compared to its theatrical counterpart. The film also opened Friday, accumulating an opening night $3.4 million total. Saturday proved to be a bit better as the film earned $4 million, but numbers quickly slid throughout Sunday as the film took home a mediocre $2.5 million. While the film’s three-day total was enough to top Spider-Man: No Way Home as well, earning second place with the $10 million total, while the web-slinging hero dangles in third, the numbers are concerning for a film that cost about $140 million to produce.

Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $9.6 million weekend total brings its overall domestic number to $748.95 million, inching closer to unseating Avatar as the third highest-grossing film domestically of all time. The number to beat for Spider-Man: No Way Home is $760 million, which it can reach if numbers continue to move in its favor. Scream ended the weekend fourth with a three-day total of $4.7 million, followed by Sing 2, which generated $4.17 million.

As more films land in theaters this month, things look to pick up at box offices. February will see the release of several films theatrically, such as Death on the Nile, Marry Me, Dog, and the highly anticipated Uncharted. It’s unclear how these projects will fare, but February will be an exciting month to observe from a performance standpoint. Jackass Forever is leading the charge so far, but it will be intriguing to see how long it can remain atop the domestic box office.

Jackass Forever and Moonfall are now playing in theaters.
