Following the Indian government’s request, Twitter has withheld the account of famous Punjabi singer Jazzy B. On opening the account a legal notice shows that this account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand.
As per the available information, during the 2020 farmer protests. The Indian government requested Twitter to withhold the account of those singers who were frequently tweeting in support of farmers protesting the government’s agriculture laws of December 2020. And as a result of the request made by the Indian officials Twitter withheld the requested accounts.
After this one of Twitter’s spokespeople said that “When we receive a valid legal request, we review it under both Twitter Rules and local law. If the content violates Twitter’s Rules, the content will be removed from the service. If it is determined to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction, but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, we may withhold access to the content in India only”.
In response to this Jazzy B issued a statement on his Instagram handle “I will always stand for the rights of my people #kisanmajdooriktazindabad #neverforget1984 #raiseyourvoice (sic)”. In the following Insta post, he added, “Waheguru ji I don’t fear physical death, but when my conscience dies, that is real death #neverforget1984 #kisanmajdooriktazindabad (sic).”
