Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp makes a surprise entry at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, dressed up as the award show’s famous Moonperson.

The surprise cameo that was leaked days earlier became Depp’s first major public appearance since he won a defamation suit against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Following an opening performance by Lizzo, who from her album Special performed “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready),” graphics touting the upcoming performances light up across the screen as an astronaut had fallen through the air above the stage.

Once the final performer was declared, the Moonman’s visor slid open to reveal a live graphic of Depp’s face inside the helmet.

The show then moved to one of the night’s hosts LL Cool J, who walked out to his hit “Mama Said Knock You Out.”

After commercial breaks, Depp appears again, first opening the Moonperson visor to demand, “Hey VMAs, let’s get back to the f—ing music, shall we?”

The second post-commercial appearance was a very self-aware plea for work, before emphasizing he says that he just wants the viewers to know that he’s available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, and any old thing they need.

He further said that you name anything then as an afterthought he adds that he’s also a dentist.
