Brendan Gleeson will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, which will be released by Warner Bros. and DC Films. According to Deadline, Zazie Beetz will be returning to reprise her role. Warner Bros. also announced that the film will be released on October 4, 2024. Production is expected to begin in December.

The casting was not commented on by Warner Bros.

Phillips returns to direct and co-wrote the script with Scott Silver, who also wrote the original film. Little is known about the sequel, but insiders believe it will include musical elements and will be set in Arkham Asylum, where the first film ends after Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) is sent there. It’s also unclear who Gleeson will play.

The first film grossed $335.4 million domestically and $1.07 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. Joker won two Academy Awards: Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Music Score for Hildur Gunadóttir. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Phillips.

Gleeson, meanwhile, will have a busy fall with his new Searchlight film The Banshees of Inisherin, which will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and a Gala premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Gleeson reunites with Colin Farrell and Martin McDonagh, who previously collaborated on the dark comedy In Bruges.
