The release date of Mandalorian season 3 will most likely be in 2022. Its producer and showrunner Jon Favreau shed light on how, in terms of a release date, The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian Season 3 will work with each other. In December 2021, the next Star Wars series will be The Book of Boba Fett, which is currently under development. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had previously said that “the next chapter” would fall in December 2021, which many believed was the Mandalorian season 3, but Favreau clarified that she meant “the next show”. The Mandalorian season 3 will arrive “pretty soon” after The Book of Boba Fett, which means that we will not see Mando before 2022, considering the late 2021 premiere of the latter.
Favreau told the hosts of Good Morning America on Monday that they decided to hold this back because they didn’t want to ruin the suspense when Kathleen Kennedy was up there at the big Disney reveal of all the series, and so they let them keep this one a secret. He added: “So this is separate from The Mandalorian season 3. But what we didn’t say in that announcement is that the next show coming up — Kathy said the next chapter — and that’s going to be The Book of Boba Fett.”
Disney also revealed the official logo for The Book of Boba Fett on Monday and confirmed the core cast and crew. As we had assumed, Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen would return as Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, respectively. Together with Star Wars veteran Filoni, Favreau would act as an executive producer, and Robert Rodriguez, who directed Chapter 14: The Tragedy, the one in which Morrison returned as Fett, the Mandalorian season 2 episode 6.
Favreau also revealed that Filoni is currently writing Ahsoka, another spin-off of The Mandalorian that follows Ahsoka Tano, the Jedi we encountered in Chapter 13: The Jedi, which was written and directed by Filoni, in The Mandalorian Season 2 episode 5. In the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film, Ahsoka was first introduced back in 2008 and then went on to play a role in the animated series of the same name, followed by an important part in Star Wars Rebels.
Since the November 2019 premiere of The Mandalorian, the Star Wars cinematic universe has expanded dramatically. We have gone from one live-action Star Wars series to eight in 13 months. In addition to the three above, there are Andor following Diego Luna’s Rogue One character, Obi-Wan Kenobi with Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, The Acolyte from Leslye Headland of Russian Doll, Lando from Dear White People’s Justin Simien, and Rangers of the New Republic from Favreau and Filoni.
On Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar, the Book of Boba Fett premieres in December 2021. The Mandalorian season 3 will follow “pretty soon”.
