God of War has been a mainstay of the PlayStation lineup since the first game was released in 2005. Sony’s teams told the tragic storey of a Spartan warrior who becomes the Greek God of War and a god-slayer himself after his wife and child are killed by Olympian deities over the course of seven releases.

The 2018 reboot picks up many years later, with Kratos on his way to scatter his second wife’s ashes, accompanied by their son Atreus. But Kratos can’t get away from his demigod past or the demons that haunt him. It doesn’t take long for father and son to become embroiled in a conflict with the Norse pantheon of gods. Along the way, we learn some important things about Kratos and Atreus.

Terrence C. Carson’s voice acting talents as Kratos were featured in previous God of War games set in Greece, and he did an excellent job. In the 2018 reboot, however, Sony Santa Monica recast the role, bringing in Stargate SG-1 veteran Christopher Judge. His interpretation of Kratos is heavily influenced by the demigod being caught between the blood-fueled rage of his past and the future prospect of raising Atreus all by himself as he grieves the death of his wife.

That latest story is fertile ground for an adaptation, and it’s likely that the source material will be preferred by the people behind the rumoured adaptation. According to Deadline, The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are collaborating on the project with The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins. Everything sounds fantastic! I just hope Judge is given the chance to reprise his role as Kratos in live-action.
