While not totally ruling out the idea, star Lady Gaga shared her thoughts on the possibility of joining a superhero project. In a new interview with Variety, Gaga, a newcomer to the silver screen who has delivered big performances in the acclaimed A Star Is Born and now House of Gucci, was asked whether or not she would join the DC or Marvel universe at any point in her career. For her, it all comes down to an exceptional story and script that has something to say.
“I might. It’s really hard for me to say that I wouldn’t do something. I think mostly I’m not interested in doing things that don’t ultimately have something meaningful to say,” Gaga said. Now with other pop stars like Harry Styles getting in on the comic book action and joining the MCU as Eros / Starfox in Eternals, Gaga may feel inclined to follow in his footsteps.
There has been much talk surrounding comic book films and whether or not they are classified as cinema. Directors like Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, and Denis Villeneuve have all voiced their opinions on this subject, believing that the recent and repetitive landscape of MCU films have turned audiences “into zombies", while other filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson and Neill Blomkamp have defended superhero movies and, believing that they’re the reason that audiences are rushing back to theatres. Even actors like Timothée Chalamet have expressed their thoughts on the topic, as he was told to avoid superhero films at any cost.
While there are many generic superhero films that can of course feel like a cut and paste of other ones, the increase of comic book characters coming to life and being adapted has paved the way for plenty more exciting and worthy stories waiting to be produced. If Gaga, someone that has come from a different background than most actors (transitioning from singing to now starring in two dramas) were to decide to take on a famous comic book role, she would no doubt deliver a memorable and engaging performance that could feel fresh in a universe like the MCU.
But for now, though, Gaga appears set to take on challenging roles that are more focused on pushing her as a performer rather than simply cashing in a project. Audiences can catch her latest role as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, a film centered on Reggiani’s journey into the Gucci family, as it has received much praise from critics. The biographical crime drama also stars Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci, Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci, Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci, Salma Hayek as Giuseppina “Pina’’ Auriemma, and Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci.
