Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will attempt to shuffle between 22 different characters and numerous storylines, which is a daunting task to undertake for showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne. However, the newly released images from Vanity Fair provide glimpses of these contrasting characters and the vast landscape where the events leading to the forging of the ring will take place. “Rings for the elves, rings for dwarves, rings for men, and then the one ring Sauron used to deceive them all. It’s the story of the creation of all those powers, where they came from, and what they did to each of those races,” stated McKay while speaking with Vanity Fair.
While the images spur tremendous excitement, the process of getting to this point was not an easy one for McKay and Payne. Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power takes place in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, but is not necessarily based on the authors novels. The events serve as a prequel to the tales of Frodo and the fellowship, enclosed within the backstories Tolkien provided in his novels appendices. The Second Age of Middle-earth was never fully written, which means McKay and Payne are crafting a story driven by inspiration. “Can we come up with the novel Tolkien never wrote and do it as the mega-event series that could only happen now?” questioned McKay. The feeling of anxiousness is understandable, especially when one considers the budget attached to the project.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is fast approaching, but limited information exists around how things in the series will play out. The release of new posters and images has created anticipation around the adventure, which will amplify when the first teaser arrives this Sunday. The series will tap into a new generation of fans while equally engaging admirers of the franchise’s past achievements. No stone was left unturned to bring the narrative to life, but how well audiences will receive it remains to be seen.
