In a sneak preview from the upcoming Cars on the Road spinoff series on Disney+, Mater feels the need, the need for speed. Cars on the Road, which makes its Disney+ Day debut on Thursday, Sept. 8, follows Lightning McQueen (again voiced by Owen Wilson) and Mater, his best friend, as they travel across the country by car from Radiator Springs to see Mater’s sister.
The series’ opening credits and catchy theme song can be heard above, and in the sneak peek from Episode 3 (titled “Salt Fever”) below, the typically sluggish Mater receives a supercharged upgrade that he is all too eager to test out while competing against his old friend Lightning on the desert flats.
Marc Sondheimer is the show’s producer, and episodes 1, 2, 8, 5, 6, and 9 were directed by Bobby Podesta, and Steve Purcell, and episodes 3, 4, and 7 by Brian Fee. The soundtrack for all nine episodes of Cars on the Road, which is available via Walt Disney Records, was composed by Jake Monaco.
This Thursday, the return of Disney+ Day precedes the D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event (running Friday through Sunday). The streaming service will debut brand-new material from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic over the course of the two events.
